Introduction to Git, and Machine Learning Workshop

We’ve got two events happening this week:

Introduction to Git
Wednesday (Sept. 19), COOR L1-84 (note the location change!), 6 PM
Ryan Jones will be showing us how to use Git, a popular free and open-source distributed version control system. It’s essentially a command-line application that helps you keep track of the history of a folder; it’s most often used for managing source code, but can be used for other purposes as well. Free pizza, just like usual!

If you don’t have it installed on your system (you can check by running “git” in a terminal), it’d be a good idea to install it before you come.

Machine Learning Workshop
Saturday (Sept. 22), COOR 184, 11 AM

Gavin Stroy, a former vice-president of LUG, will be introducing us to machine learning. Here’s his agenda for the workshop:

Looking to get started in machine learning?

In this workshop, you will be provided an introduction to machine learning as well as how it can be used to solve information security challenges.

This will be done through practical examples and real world scenarios.

You will start by diving head first into building and training your own models using the 7-step machine learning process. This will both be done from scratch (yes, from scratch) and using the Scikit-learn python library.

Throughout the workshop, you will learn the nuances and considerations of the machine learning process, such as:

  • Selecting a model
  • Training and validation
  • Feature selection
  • Overfitting and Underfitting
  • Understanding what it means to have a “Good” model

=== Requirements ===

  • Minimal math background required (college freshman level; algebra)
  • Fluent in python (2.7/3.6)
  • Must have Anaconda installed with Scikit-learn (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HlaE16DWzVU)
  • Must bring own laptop (or desktop, but why tho?)

Hope to see you at both of these events!
